IshouldtellyouthatwhenIwasaskedtobehere,Ithoughttomyselfthatwell,it'sTED.AndtheseTEDstersare-youknow,asinnocentasthatnamesounds-thesearethephilanthropistsandartistsandscientistswhosortofshapeourworld.AndwhatcouldIpossiblyhavetosaythatwouldbedistinguishedenoughtojustifymyparticipationinsomethinglikethat?AndsoIthoughtperhapsareallycivilizedsoundingBritishaccentmighthelpthingsabit.
AndthenIthoughtno,no.IshouldjustgetupthereandbemyselfandjusttalkthewayIreallytalkbecause,afterall,thisisthegreatunveiling.AndsoIthoughtI'dcomeuphereandunveilmyrealvoicetoyou.AlthoughmanyofyoualreadyknowthatIdospeaktheQueen'sEnglishbecauseIamfromQueens,NewYork.(Laughter)Butthethemeofthissession,ofcourse,isinvention.AndwhileIdon'thaveanypatentsthatI'mawareof,youwillbemeetingafewofmyinventionstoday.AndIsupposeit'sfairtosaythatIaminterestedintheinventionofselforselves.We'reallbornintocertaincircumstanceswithparticularphysicaltraits,uniquedevelopmentalexperiences,geographicalandhistoricalcontexts.Butthenwhat?Towhatextentdoweself-construct,doweself-invent?Howdoweself-identifyandhowmutableisthatidentity?Like,whatifonecouldbeanyoneatanytime?Wellmycharacters,liketheonesinmyshows,allowmetoplaywiththespacesbetweenthosequestions.AndsoI'vebroughtacoupleofthemwithme.Andwell,they'reveryexcited.WhatIshouldtellyou--whatIshouldtellyouisthatthey'veeachpreparedtheirownlittleTEDtalks.SofeelfreetothinkofthisasSarahUniversity.(Laughter)
Okay.Okay.Oh,well.Oh,wonderful.Goodeveningeverybody.Thankyousoverymuchforhavingmeheretoday.Ah,thankyouverymuch.MynameisLoraineLevine.Ohmy!There'ssomanyofyou.Hisweetheart.Okay.(Laughter)Anyway,Iamherebecauseofayounggirl,SarahJones.She'saverynice,young,blackgirl.Wellyouknow,shecallsherselfblack,she'sreallymorelikeacaramelcolorifyoulookather.Butanyway,(Laughter)shehasmeherebecausesheputsmeinhershow,whatshecallsherone-womanshow.Andyouknowwhatthatmeans,ofcourse.Thatmeansshetakesthecreditandthenmakesuscomeouthereanddoallthework.ButIdon'tmind.
Frankly,I'mkvellingjusttobeherewithalltheluminariesyouhaveattendingsomethinglikethis,youknow.Really,it'samazing.Notonly,ofcourse,thescientistsandallthewonderfulgiantsoftheindustriesbutthecelebrities.Therearesomanycelebritiesrunningaroundhere.Isaw--GlennCloseIsawearlier.Iloveher.AndshewasgettingayogurtintheGooglecafe.Isn'tthatadorable.(Laughter)Somanyothersyousee,they'rejustwonderful.It'slovelytoknowthey'reconcerned,youknow.And--oh,IsawGoldieHawn.Oh,GoldieHawn.Iloveher,too;she'swonderful.Yeah.Youknow,she'sonlyhalfJewish.Didyouknowthatabouther?Yeah.Butevenso,awonderfultalent.AndI--youknow,whenIsawher,suchawonderfulfeeling.Yeah,she'slovely.Butanyway,IshouldhavestartedbysayingjusthowluckyIfeel.It'ssuchaneye-openingexperiencetobehere.You'reallsoresponsibleforthisworldthatweliveintoday.Youknow,Icouldn'thavedreamedofsuchathingasayounggirl.Andyou'veallmadetheseadvancementshappeninsuchashorttime.You'reallsoyoung.Youknow,you'reparentsmustbeveryproud.

Okay.Sorry.Soanyway,whatIwastryingtosayisthatIreallyloveTED.Like,Iloveeverythingaboutthis.It'samazing.Like,it's--Ican'tgetoverthisrightnow.And,like,peoplewouldnotbelieve,seriously,whereI'mfrom,thatthisevenexists.Youknow,likeeven,ImeanIlovelikethename,the--TED.ImeanIknowit'sarealpersonandeverything,butI'mjustsayingthatlike,youknow,Ithinkit'sverycoolhowit'salsoanacronym,youknow,whichislike,youknow,islikeveryhighconceptandeverythinglikethat.Ilikethat.
Andactually,Icanrelatetothewholelikeacronymthingandeverything.Because,actually,I'masophomoreatcollegerightnow.Atmyschool--actuallyIwaspartofco-foundinganorganization,whichislikealeadershipthing,youknow,likeyouguys,youwouldreallylikeitandeverything.AndtheorganizationiscalledDABOMB,AndDABOMB--notlikewhatyouguyscanbuildandeverything--It'slike,DABOMB,itmeanslikeDominican--it'sanacronym--DominicanAmericanBenevolentOrganizationforMothersandBabies.So,Iknow,see,likethenameislikealittlebitlong,butwiththewaronterrorandeverything,theDeanofStudentActivitieshasaskedustostopsayingDABOMBandusethewholethingsonobodywouldgetthewrongidea,whatever.So,basicallylikeDABOMB--whatDominicanAmericanBenevolentOrganizationforMothersandBabiesdoesis,basically,wetrytoadvocateforstudentswhoshowalotofacademicpromiseandwhoalsohappentobemotherslikeme.Iamaworkingmother,andIalsogotoschoolfull-time.And,youknow,it'slike--it'ssoimportanttohavelikerolemodelsoutthere.Imean,Iknowsometimesourlifestylesareverydifferent,whatever.
Butlikeevenatmyjob--like,Ijustgotpromoted.Rightnowit'sveryexcitingactuallyformebecauseI'mtheJuniorAssistanttotheAssociateDirectorundertheSeniorVicePresidentforBusinessDevelopment.That'smynewtitle.So,butIthinkwhetpanyoryou'rejuststartingoutlikeme,likesomethinglikethissovitalforpeopletojustcontinueexpandingtheirmindsandlearning.Andifeverybody,likeallpeoplereallyhadaccesstothat,itwouldbeaverydifferentworldoutthere,asIknowyouknow.So,Ithinkallpeople,weneedthat,butespecially,Ilookatpeoplelikeme,youknowlike,Imean,Latinos,we'reabouttobethemajority,inliketwoweeks.So,wedeservejustasmuchtobepartoftheexchangeofideasaseverybodyelse.So,I'mveryhappythatyou're,youknow,doingthiskindofthing,makingthetalksavailableonline.That'sverygood.Ilovethat.AndIjust--Iloveyouguys.IloveTED.Andifyoudon'tmind,privatelynow,inthefuture,I'mgoingtothinkofTEDasanacronymforTechnology,EntertainmentandDominicans.Thankyouverymuch.(Laughter)(Applause)
So,thatwasNoraida,andjustlikeLoraineandeverybodyelseyou'remeetingtoday,thesearefolkswhoarebasedonrealpeoplefrommyreallife.Friends,neighbors,familymembers.Icomefromamulticulturalfamily.Infact,theolderladyyoujustmet,very,verylooselybasedonagreatauntonmymother'sside.It'salongstory,believeme.Butontopofmyfamilybackground,myparentsalsosentmetoUnitedNationsschool,whereIencounteredaplethoraofnewcharactersincludingAlexandre,myFrenchteacher,okay.
Well,youknow,itwasbeginnerFrench,thatIamtakingwithher,youknow.AnditwasMadameBousson,youknow,shewasvery[French].Itwaslike,youknow,shewasthereintheclass,youknow,shewaskindoftypicallyFrench.Youknow,shewaswasverychic,butshewasveryfilledwithennui,youknow.Andshewouldbethere,youknow,kindoftalkingwiththeclass,youknow,talkingaboutthe,youknow,theexistentialfutilityoflife,youknow.Andwewereonly11yearsold,soitwasnotappropriate.
