　　One Student Is Just Like a Flower

　　My dear Mr. and Misses, my fellows schoolmates,Good morning! As you know and see, it is a sunny bump harvest season. In the city, in our school campus, everywhere is surrounded with roses which we together planted 4 years ago. Today may these roses and our friendship as well be together and comfort our excited hearts!

　　It was four years ago that everyone of us came from every part of China and formed a new collective. As we are young, it’s very easy for us to communicate. It was in the past four years that we were ambitious. It was in the past four years that we worried. It was in the past four years that we were content. It was in the past four years that we were vexed. It was in the past four years that we were friendly and lonely ... and it was in the past fours that we studied, lived and respected each other with genuine and with our ambitions. Nothing in the world is more significant than we miss all of these.

　　We miss you─teachers who are tireless in teaching; we will keep your gestures and your white hairs in our hearts deeply; we will miss the quietness with the lights at night in the classroom; we will miss the race and exercise on the playground; we will miss even the crowds in the dining hall and the quarrel on the beds; we will still miss every green piece and every piece of waste paper flying like flakes in the air ... However, today we will leave nothing but the first rose with our Alma Mater and our teachers which is entrusted with our love and respect.

　　4 years seems very long but 4 years seems very short. From now on, we all will go into the society. The society is broad and wide for us. We will shoulder heavy responsibilities; we will work diligently; and we will expect to be informed of good news from one another. Now, I beg you all to cherish the occasion; to remember the names, the status, appearance and the character of the person around you. Now let’s be hand in hand together; let’s present the rose to each other. May the rose carry our appreciation and blessing! We are very closely linked no matter what the world may be. May the fresh rose in our hands keep its fragrants!

　　tonight i want to talk to you on a subject of deep concern to all americansand to many people in all parts of the world, the war in vietnam.

　　i believe that one of the reasons for the deep division about vietnam isthat many americans have lost confidence in what their government has told themabout our policy.

　　the american people cannot and should not be asked to support a policywhich involves the overriding issues of war and peace unless they know the truthabout that , therefore, i would like to answer some of thequestions that i know are on the minds of many of you listening to me.how andwhy did america get involved in vietnam in the first place?how has thisadministration changed the policy of the previous administration?what has reallyhappened in the negotiations in paris and the battlefront in vietnam?whatchoices do we have if we are to end the war?what are the prospects for peace?now let me begin by describing the situation i found when i was inaugurated onjan.

　　20th: the war had been going on for four years.

　　thirty-one thousand americans had been killed in action.

　　the training program for the south vietnamese was behind schedule.

　　five hundred forty-thousand americans were in vietnam with no plans toreduce the number.

　　no progress had been made at the negotiations in paris and the unitedstates had not put forth a comprehensive peace proposal.the war was causing deepdivision at home and criticism from many of our friend, as well as our enemies,abroad.in view of these circumstances, there were some who urged withdrawal ofall american forces.

　　from a political standpoint, this would have been a popular and easy courseto follow.

　　after all, we became involved in the war while my predecessor was inoffice.

　　i could blame the defeat, which would be the result of my action, on him --and come out as the peacemaker.

　　some put it to me quite bluntly: this was the only way to avoid allowingjohnson’s war to become nixon’s war.but i had a greater obligation than to thinkonly of the years of my administration, and of the next election.

　　i had to think of the effect of my decision on the next generation, and onthe future of peace and freedom in america, and in the world.let us allunderstand that the question before us is not whether some americans are forpeace and some americans are against peace.

　　the question at issue is not whether johnson’s war becomes nixon’s war.

　　Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen. today,we are gathering here to discuss a very hot issue. how to find harmony in a new age between man and nature? where modern science and technology are concerned i am only a layman i have to say. however, living in this "new age" ， seeing my dear ones suffering from respiratory diseases from time to time, finding the beautiful colors of green and blue are being replaced by that of gray and pale, and realizing that our mother planet is getting more and more unhealthy; i cant help trying to offer my idea and my trivial efforts to look for the answer of the question.

　　Who are we? this is a question, which should be answered not only by those specialists, but also by every one of human beings.

　　Some people may proudly say: we are the masters of nature. it is true that the idea of "man can conquer nature" has dominated peoples mind for years, and it is true, man has kept acting like a master and doing whatever things he wants for thousands of years. however, as the consequence of this kind of "leadership" ， now the "master" seems to be confronted with problems that are far beyond his control. facts are really very ample. thegreen house effect leaves islands and cities along the coast, such as this oriental pearl-shanghai, in danger of the disaster of being drowned;the holes of the ozone layer make the earth less suitable to live for some creatures including human beings;the phenomena of el nino and la nina leave the land with serious flood and drought, and the diseases, caused by pollution,are increasing at an incredible speed.。. seeing all these facts, can we still ignore the counterattack of nature? we are not the masters of nature. facing all the disasters made by ourselves, we, mankind as a whole should realize that we are just a normal member of the big family of nature. any mistreatment towards nature will meet only with the revenge from her.

　　By saying so, i do not mean we should give a sudden stop to any development. because that will result in a threat to the existence of human society. i mean we should treat nature equally, leaving the chance of existence and development to nature as we are obtaining the same thing, and thus we will get the situation of win-win.

　　I am very pleased to find that now more and more people, from every corner of the planet, have come to realize that harmony with nature is the only way to universal and continuous progress and prosperity. and i think that is why we come here from all over the country to discuss this topic today.

　　I want to end my speech by quoting from mr. nixon. "our destiny offers, not the cup of despair, but the chalice of opportunity." the future is not ours to see of course. however, by seizing firmly the opportunities, by knowing clearly about ourselves, we, human beings, can doubtlessly achieve the real harmony with nature!

　　lastly,harmonious atmosphere is not something imposed on us but somethingwe need to cultivate,which will definitely bring more vitality to thecampus.

　　all in all, actions speak louder than words.we must make endeavors torefresh the atmosphere and each positive effort will increase the harmony oncampus.a harmonious campus is a cradle where we become social andknowledgeable.thereby, it is remained for us to create such a harmoniouscampus.thus we can feel warm,inspiring and live merrily in harmony.
